The HUSTLER family of Whitby are the ancestors of Annie Maud SCHOFIELD, who married Arnold McDANIELSON in 1924.
Richard HUSTLER was born c1789 at Thornton (aka Thornton Dale), Yorkshire. He appears on the censuses for 1841, 1851, and 1861 resident at Whitby aged 52, 62 and 72 respectively. No corresponding birth entry is found on the IGI for his birth c1789.
Richard’s lifelong occupation was a Ropemaker, an essential trade in the fishing port of Whitby, where on 6 June 1813 he married Isabella HODGSON. The parish register records their marriage and Richard’s occupation (‘roper’) but the names of their parents are not recorded.
They had six children so far known of, all born in Whitby: William Hodgson, 19 June 1814; Sarah, 7 February 1816; Ann, 20 Feb 1818; Thomas, 24 Aug 1820; Isabella, 26 February 1823; Richard, 13 December 1825. All were baptised at Cliff End Presbyterian Church, Whitby.
Children of Richard HUSTLER and Isabella HODGSON
The 1841 census finds Richard, aged 52, resident at Baxtergate, Whitby, with his son Thomas who was an Apprentice Ropemaker. Also resident is Isabella, possibly Eland, aged 52 who is recorded as ‘F.S.’, which means ‘Female Servant’.
A likely entry for his wife Isabella’s death is found in the Whitby parish registers on 23rd December 1825, which records her age as 37, suggesting her birth year as c1788. This burial entry, coming just a few days after the baptism entry for her son Richard, suggests she may have died as a result of childbirth.
Isabella and Richard’s son William Hodgson was now resident at Prospect Place, Whitby and was a Shoe Maker. He had married Catherine EASTON, daughter of Francis EASTON an Hannah DENEY, on 28 December 1836 at Whitby and they had five children so far known of: Isabella c1838; Thomas Easton c1839; Hannah c1843; Richard c 1846; Mary Ann c1848.
By 1851 Richard was still resident at Baxtergate. With him was his married daughter Ann and her husband John AUCKLAND (AUKLAND), a Blacksmith. She and John had married in 1847 at Whitby and they had a son, George born c1848.
Richard’s son, Thomas, had married in 1846 at Whitby to Alice JACKSON, born c1823, (possibly daughter of William and Mary JACKSON). In 1851 they also lived at Baxtergate, just two doors away from Richard. Thomas eventually became a Master Rope Maker, employing up to 16 workers and he was listed in Bulmer’s Directory [of Trades and Professions] in 1890, resident at Spital Bridge, near Whitby. He and Alice had seven children so far known of: Alice Jackson 1846; Mary Jackson 1847; Richard c1854; Wm Francis c1859; Isabella c1859; George 1861; Sarah Corner 1865; all born in Whitby.
The Northern Echo of 4th April 1874 reports that Thomas’ ropemaking workshop and its contents were destroyed in a fire accidentally started by one of his sons. This calamity occurred just two days after he had allowed his fire insurance to lapse. His later entry (above) in Bulmer’s directory suggests that he had by then restored his business.
By 1851, Richard’s daughter Isabella had married John BURTON – see BURTON link for details – and they also lived at Baxtergate. They are the direct ancestors of the current McDANIELSON family.
